A new studio in the cotton mill

After nine years in a ground-floor room, the studio moved up two storeys. North light, a goods lift, and room to step back.

Written

The old studio was eleven metres long and faced the yard. I could never get further than four metres from a painting, and anything over 160 centimetres had to leave through the window.

What changed

The new room is on the third floor of the same mill. It has north light from five windows, a goods lift that takes a two-metre canvas upright, and a back wall I can stand nine metres away from.

The first painting made here, Hoarfrost, is the largest I have finished. That is not a coincidence.

Visiting

Visits are on Thursdays and Fridays, by appointment. Take the lift in the second courtyard; the stairs are longer than they look.
